We are a community of Christian people who meet together as part of the Sydney Anglican group of churches. As the name "Christian" suggests, Jesus Christ is the centre of, and the reason behind, all that we do. At its simplest, being a Christian is really all about responding appropriately to Jesus Christ.
How does a person come to respond appropriately to Jesus Christ? We can reliably find out about and get to know Jesus Christ through reading the bible. Without God having taken the initiative in coming to us in the person of Jesus Christ, and having provided us with the authoritative description and explanation of these events in the bible, we would have no way of rightly responding to him. The bible therefore informs and governs our lives as Christians.
The Bible tells us that the historical Jesus possessed all the authority of God himself. Throughout his life he taught and demonstrated clearly that he was God's saviour-king (that is what the title "Christ" means). His role on earth was to head up God's rescue mission. His aim is to find people who have distanced themselves from God and offer them a return home and a fresh start.
The climax of Jesus' mission on earth came with his death on a Roman cross around the year 30AD in Jerusalem. The meaning of his death is simple. God's powerful saviour-king sacrificed his life to take our punishment upon himself, so that we could have open access to God.
Within 3 days of Jesus' death, he was made alive again. He defeated death and now governs this world from heaven until his return to earth for the final consummation of his rule. The fact that Jesus has been raised from the dead demands that we respond to him. Jesus expected this response to take the form of a turn around of attitude which accepts Christ's leadership of our lives.
At St Marks and St Davids we are working together at living rightly under Jesus Christ's leadership. We warmly invite you to join us and discover more about him and the kind of life he gives us. You may also want to find out some more now. If so click here.
